Pools were thrashed 5-0 by MK Dons at home on Saturday and were faced with another unenviable fixture at the Valley.

But Turner's side produced a spirited display and looked on course to avoid a fifth consecutive away defeat before Scott Wagstaff's late strike gave Charlton a 2-1 victory.

Denis Behan had levelled for Pools from the penalty spot early in the second half after David Mooney had opened the scoring.

Turner said: "I think some pride was restored. I've just been asked if I had a right go at the players after Saturday, but I didn't because I knew they were better than that and here each and every player gave their best and played well.

"I think we were unlucky not to come away with a point from here."
